Since 1928, United Cycle has served the Edmonton sporting community. Founded by Raleigh Brooks and his family who worked hard to build up a small business, the United Team now includes several members of the Brooks' extended family and the families of many long serving staff members and customers. Within this hectic retail environment, United Cycle's long-term success has been achieved through specializing in quality products, vast selection and preserving and maintaining a family oriented philosophy.
It's hard to imagine that the narrow 900 square feet from which United Cycle operated in the 1920's has blossomed to over 50,000 square feet today. After moving through three locations, including two on Whyte Avenue and one on 104th Street, United Cycle is now a cornerstone of Old Strathcona on Gateway Boulevard, stretching Old Strathcona's boundaries south to University Avenue. To enhance its areas of specialization, United Cycle now features two unique outlets on their site. The sporting goods store was built in 1994 and the bicycle shop was added in 1999.
Product lines have changed with the emergence of year round ice and the extensive River Valley trail system. Skating season is no longer determined by the winter conditions, and bikes are ridden more for leisure than transportation and business. United Cycle has evolved from a time when goods and services were provided largely by mail order, department stores, and mom and pop stores. United Cycle met its customers' needs then, and is growing to serve them now, in a bold new era of mega box stores.
Raleigh Brooks represented the first generation of this family-owned business and worked by this simple philosophy,
"Take care of your customers, be honest, and they will continue to support you."
Today, the fourth generation of the Brook's family operates United Cycle by the same code. United Cycle looks forward to the future and to serving the 5th generation of customers and their families!
