Company description:

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Plans a program menu for meals and snacks for women and children in 4 pre & postnatal groups per week. Provides meals that are nutritious, satisfying and sensitive to a variety of cultures, allergies and meal preferences. Plans and prepares special meals for different celebrations, events and holidays.

2. Purchases and orders food items necessary for the preparation of meals and snacks. Ensures purchases are within budget and maintains an inventory of supplies and food. Purchases bus tickets as required.

3. Responsible for preparing, cooking and cleaning up for all meals and snacks using safe food handling and preparation, and following safety and health standards. When necessary, provides direction to volunteers assisting in preparation, cooking and cleaning.

4. Oversees the maintenance, effectiveness and cleanliness of the kitchen and kitchen equipment. Ensures Health & Safety regulations are met, maintained and followed. Ensures proper cleaning of kitchen laundry. Maintains appropriate equipment to meet the needs of the program, replacing as necessary and maintaining an inventory of all equipment belonging to the program. Liaises and maintains good relationships with service and food/equipment providers.

5. Interacts with clients as it relates to meals, provides recipes to clients on day it is served and responds to requests for recipes from clients as required. Presents food and cooking related education sessions and food demonstrations to clients.

6. Completes all written documentation accurately and efficiently as required including receipts for purchases and the administration of nutrition coupons.

7. Coordinates the monthly Good Food Bag program by planning, ordering and receiving food from ProOrganics and organizing into individual food bags. Selects appropriate recipes to use based on the food received.

8. Ability to work in a multicultural setting; maintaining professional boundaries with clients; must abide by the confidentiality agreement.

9. Performs other related duties as required.
Education, Training and Experience:

I. Completion of diploma or certificate or courses in culinary arts, home economics, nutrition, food preparation, storage and related sanitation and hygiene practices and procedures or equivalent combination of education and experience.
II. Certificate in Food Safe One.
III. One year experience as a cook.
IV. Ability to work in a non-profit, social service environment with “at-risk” populations.

Job Skills and Abilities:

I. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks using good organization, time and general management skills.
II. Good written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
III. Ability to work both within a team and independently.
IV. Cultural competency with an ability to be culturally sensitive, respectful, confidential and caring when dealing with diverse values, beliefs and lifestyle.
V. Second language is an asset


Additional Information:

I. Valid Driver’s License and available vehicle.
II. No criminal record.
III. Willingness to work in environment with regular exposure to hot stove elements, sharp instruments, standing, bending, lifting, walking, climbing stairs, and driving and carrying moderate weights.
