Company description:
www.Unitopia.ca is the home page from which any university/college in
Canada may be accessed. In a vague way, it resembles facebook or MySpace,
with one outstanding difference - Unitopia.ca addresses the academic
community. Unitopia is designed and implemented by a Trent U student who
thought 'things could be made better' and set out to do so..
A hundred years ago, all university students lived within walking distance
of each other and shared community space where they could engage in
discussion about - anything - including class content, assignments and so
on.
Now, particularly in Canada where the distances are so vast, many students
live off campus and miss out on that close camaraderie. For them, the
academic experience is closer to distance learning than to building a
network of lifelong friends.
The class forums, and club / interest group forums on Unitopia are designed
to address that issue, by fostering a sense of community within the academic
setting, giving students a place to go to meet others with similar
interests, similar problems (eg how did you do the fourth question on the
lab assignment?). Even professors could drop in from time to time to see
how well they had presented a difficult point - and could rectify any
difficulties in the next lecture or tutorial. Clubs could put one posting
on their discussion group and reach all members of their clubs, including
attracting new members. There is no limit except imagination as to what can
be done.
