Senior Clinical Psychologist (Dublin)
 

BJCABM/COL/070408/01 -- This Psychology Department is situated in a large hospital and provides a resource to all areas of the hospital. This hospital is unique in the context of the range of services provided as a centre of excellence and of tertiary referral for the entire country in specialties such as Oncology, Haematology, Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, HIV and Hepatitis C, Respirology and Cystic Fibrosis, Orthopaedics, Spina Bifida, Burns, Intensive Care, etc. In addition to working with all medical and surgical specialties and the patient support unit, the Department of Psychology also acts as a formal and informal resource to staff in their work with children, including doctors, nurses, teachers, play specialists, hospital volunteers, etc. Lectures are provided frequently to groups within and outside the hospital.

Responsibilities:
• The successful candidate will be expected to work with a number of medical and surgical teams, providing a service to children and families attending with a wide range of medical and psychological problems.
• The successful candidate will work directly with children and adolescents, supporting them through diagnosis and treatment and helping them to meet developmental challenges while coping with an acute condition or living with a chronic medical condition.
• A key role of the psychologist is to ensure that psychological factors are taken into account in the child’s medical assessment and treatment. Both individual and group work is encouraged.
• Many patients will be attending long term, from infancy through adolescence. Liaison work with adult hospitals will sometimes be required in helping older adolescents to make the transition from a children’s hospital.
• Attendance at weekly team meetings is required.
• The successful candidate will become a member of a large Paediatric Psychology Department and will be expected to contribute to the overall running and development of the department and to attend weekly Paediatric Psychology meetings.
• The Psychology Department is involved in an Accreditation process with the rest of the hospital, and this will entail working towards an ever improving service.
• Flexibility and resilience is required of all staff working in this hospital.
• Provide professional services to both in and out patients.
• Assessment of cognitive, social and emotional status.
• Provide individual therapeutic intervention as necessary.
• Liaison with medical, nursing and other professional staff as well as outside agencies and schools.
• Involvement in the organizing and running of groups for children and parents of children with similar medical problems.
• The successful candidate will also have links with other related medical and surgical teams.
• The candidate will try to be especially available to children with life threatening conditions and their families.
• The candidate will be expected to acquire a thorough understanding of the psychological impact of physical illness, (in particular of those conditions seen by the medical/surgical teams with which they are involved), on children and families, and to be up to date with research findings into best psychological practice.

Requirements:
• Hold a recognised University degree or diploma obtained with first or second class honours in which Psychology was taken as a major subject and honours obtained in that subject.
• Have a recognized postgraduate qualification in Clinical Psychology.
• Ideally have at least five years satisfactory postgraduate experience in Clinical Psychology inclusive of any time spent in pursuing a course leading to the postgraduate qualification.
