Job Summary

Reporting to the Commercial Lines Manager, the underwriting specialist will manage a book of business, while writing complex risks or risk requiring specific technical knowledge and skills within a specific segment. The incumbent will develop and maintain strong Broker relationships within specific segments. More precisely, he/she will act as the center of underwriting expertise for a specific business segment within the branch; maintain specialized knowledge of market trends, pricing levels and legal requirements within the specific business segments; develop, coordinate and conduct technical training to staff and Brokers for a specific business segment which would include the development of program criteria or manuscript wordings for approval; identify, attract, assess and evaluate new and existing business within a specific business segment. Monitor profitability of specific business segments through analysis of results, broker management where applicable and transaction level management. make appropriate recommendations to management to improve growth and profit. Conduct regular Broker/Insured sales calls focusing on key accounts within the specific business segments to build a climate of partnership and negotiation and to promote the value of one Aviva.

Job Responsibilities

Develop and negotiate terms and pricing for New and Renewal business with our Broker partners on selected accounts within their specialized area of expertise.
Develop relationships with existing Brokers who share knowledge and expertise in specific portfolios, classes of business or market segments and increase our penetration with those Brokers.
Work with Brokers identified as having potential for growth of a specific segment to develop their expertise and the specialized knowledge required to grow that segment of business.
Provide guidance and share specialized technical knowledge including specialized technical training on coverage and exposure with other Underwriting areas within the department, Loss Control and Claims or Brokers and Insureds for specific business segment(s).
Provide instructions for issuance of new business as well as renewals.
Participate in the Branch Self Review process and/or the NCL Review Process as required.
Liaise with Mentors on referrals, opinions.

Experience/Skills Required

8 - 10 YEARS experience in a senior underwriting capacity writing mid-market commercial business including minimum 3 to 5 years developing a high level of expertise within their specialized business segment.
Demonstrates a high level of knowledge within their specialized business segment including in depth understanding of their business segment's operations and their specific or unique business and insurance requirements.
Aptitude for training both in group and one on one settingsSales/Negotiation skills including an aptitude for "face to face" communication with brokers and insureds.
High level of both verbal and written communications skills including the ability to prepare and present a professional overview of Aviva or topic covering a specific area of expertise.
Ability to research and analyze issues, trends, accounts, portfolios, classes of business or market segments in a specific area of expertise using a solution oriented approach, and to develop recommendations on appropriate action or terms and conditions for the most effective use of Aviva capital.
Ability to develop and implement solution oriented approaches to writing business while adhering to basic underwriting principles and maintaining attention to profit.
The ability to explain and support decisions made and actions taken effectively, with file documentation, is a requirement of the position.
A high level of technical skill is a requirement of this position with a focus on a specialized line of business, coverage area, portfolio, class of business or market segment.

Experience/Skills Preferred

8 - 10 years experience un a senior underwriting capacity writing mid-market commercial business in a specialized area.
CIP Designation or equivalent.
Proficiency with software for account analysis, preparation of presentations, reports and exhibits.
Ability to research topics and develop network for review of trends, emerging issues in a specific area of expertise/business segment.

Minimum Education requirement

Secondary School.
Enrollment in CIP program or equivalent.


Preferred level of Education

Community College Diploma with insurance focus.
Bachelor's Degree.
CIP Designation or equivalent.
