TakingITGlobal (TIG) is seeking a part-time Tread Lightly Program Assistant to join our vibrant team in Toronto!

TAKINGITGLOBAL

TIG is an international, non-profit organization lead by youth and empowered by technology. TIG connects youth from around the world to find inspiration, access information, get involved, and take action to improve their local, regional and global communities. In 2006, TIG launched TIGed - an education program that leverages the resources, opportunities, and community of the TIG platform in order to create rich, interactive, global classrooms. By using TIGed, teachers can connect students to diverse perspectives, opportunities for creative expression, and interactive resources to help better engage them in learning.

TREAD LIGHTLY

Tread Lightly is a climate change education initiative offered by TIG with the generous support of the Staples Foundation for Learning®. Developed to help global citizens to lighten the load they place on planet earth, it features:
1) An interdisciplinary secondary school curriculum that explores climate change through the lens of ecological footprints - a measure of the toll humans are placing on the planet;
2) "Imprints" - an international ecological art contest; and
3) A global 40-day footprint challenge.

THE POSITION

The Tread Lightly assistant will support the implementation, development, and promotion of the program. This position is ideal for a dynamic, organized, detail-oriented individual with a passion for using social media within an educational context to foster youth engagement and activism - especially with respect to environmental sustainability.

Roles and Responsibilities
• Provide support to the schools implementing the Tread Lightly curriculum
• Assist in responding to emails sent to xxxx@xxxxxxxxxxxx.xx
• Assist in promoting the program and its initiatives through Twitter, blogs, email distribution, press release circulation, and media outreach
• Identify and reach out to potentially interested schools, youth groups, organizations, networks, etc. in order to increase participation in Tread Lightly initiatives
• Lead the art contest judging process and the purchase and distribution of prizes
• Assist with the preparations required for TIG’s presence at the UN climate change conference in Denmark in December
• Assist with the interim and final reports to the Staples Foundation for Learning
• Collect feedback from Tread Lightly participants through a questionnaire, survey, or focus group to feed into the next phase of program development
• Research, brainstorm, and advise on initiatives to include in next phase
• Contribute to the revision of the Tread Lightly teacher toolkit
• Initiate new relationships with potential partners, supporters and/or advisors
• Represent TIG at workshops, conferences, and other school and community events
• Work to develop the list of FAQs available on the www.treadlightly.me

Required Qualifications
• Studies in a related field (e.g. Education, Communications, Media, International Development, Information Sciences, Environmental Studies, etc.)
• Significant interest in education, engagement and activism, especially with respect to climate change and other environmental issues
• High level of media literacy and an understanding of the uses of web 2.0 tools
• Proficient in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software, other software, and internet-based research
• Detail oriented, organized, with strong time management skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
• Able to work independently and collaboratively in a fast paced office environment, with multiple shifting priorities
• Leadership skills and facilitation experience
• Willingness to learn new things and eagerness to acquire new skills

Asset Qualifications
• Significant interest in youth-related issues and experience working with young people from a wide variety of cultures
• Fluency in languages other than English
• Experience working and/or volunteering in the non-profit sector
• International work or volunteer experience

Remuneration

The Tread Lightly Program Assistant will receive CAD $1,750 per month for 30-35 hours of work per week for a period of three months.
