Job Summary:
The incumbent is responsible for performing the day-to-day operating system administrative activities for Computing Services managed web servers running the Linux operating system.
In addition, will perform assigned system administration duties for all network services in support of web delivery and the web development environment.
This will require familiarity in software deployment and integration in a GNU/Linux environment working predominately with Open Source tools and programs. This can include development of web applications with at least a scripting language requirement.
The incumbent reports to the Senior Web System Administrator through whom general direction and priorities are set.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Linux Systems Administration (40%)
Responsible for the enhancement, installation, optimization, and maintenance of the Linux operating system on Web servers, including network configuration and clustering
Responsible for assisting in the evaluation of hardware for dedicated Web servers in a high availability context and working with other areas in deployment of this hardware
Responsible for setup and administration of network services (ie. mail, ftp, smbd, etc.)
Responsible for setup and administration of database engines on Web servers for supporting database web pages
Responsible for addressing security concerns from a host hardening perspective with implementation and management using security administration tools
Responsible for supporting AU Web Editors access to Web server
Web Services Systems Administration (40%)
Responsible for installation, configuration, optimization, and maintenance of various web servers, (ie. apache, tomcat) including the various modules and that can configured into or function with these servers, (ie. mod_perl, mod_ssl) and monitoring the security of these servers
Responsible for supporting the various services that support the web environment and developers like web search engines, web conferencing, web site management tools and logging tools
Responsible for assisting the web application developers by setting up programming environment and installing and deploying the tools and resources required. This can include installation/configuration of Perl modules, GNU development tools to specialized programmer tools.
Other (20%)
Analysis, development and maintenance of web projects using at a minimum web scripting languages or templating systems
Provide backup support for the Senior Web System Administrator
Developing tools that would assist in administration of operating system, environment and web content
Maintain a watch on industry developments
Perform some operational tasks for the continuance of a stable environment including responding to helpdesk problems
Assist senior people when appropriate for strategic planning and budget processes
Activities that would relate to appropriate security concerns of the web environment and content
Occasional user training
Communication:
The incumbent has to communicate with a broad range of web developers, vendors, and implementers of web solutions within University. They have to communicate at a high technical level and work in collaboration with other in Web Unit, CS and throughout the University, while still being able to communicate effectively with non-technical client staff. Communication with Help Desk technicians in problem resolution is also required.
Supervision:
Supervision is limited to summer students and people seeking work experience in this domain.
Impact of Service Product:
Delivery of web intranet and web internet services from Computing Services are directly related to quality of support the incumbent exercises in maintaining and enhancing the servers and server applications supporting web delivery which continue to expand and become a critical component of the clients normal operation.
Independence of Action:
The position will report to the Senior Web System Administrator and incumbent must be able to perform work in an independent fashion with the general direction of tasks being assigned. They must also be able to anticipate problems that may develop and make recommendations on appropriate actions.
Complexity:
This position requires a diverse and broader range of skills than a typical System Administrator because they have to be equally capable of understanding typical system administration duties and understand |
