Job Summary:
In consultation with CCIS Director, this specialist in Web programmed content is responsible for the analysis, development, implementation and maintenance of CCISs electronic learning environment. The scope of this includes all areas pertaining to user support, systems administration, Web administration, programming, supervision of others involved in producing CCIS Web courses, and in researching new and emerging Web technologies particularly in relations to learning environments. The skills necessary to complete these projects include a number of interdisciplinary areas, including: systems administration, Web server administration and application development, design of web-based multimedia tutorials and instructional materials, database administration and programming, structured Web document storage, various programming environments, cross-platform expertise, helpdesk administration, and project administration.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Develop New (Web) Learning Environments and Maintain Existing Systems (30%)
Spearhead project initiatives in developing and transitioning applications to extend CCIS's intranet and internet
Analyze learning system requirements to determine the appropriate application of Web technologies
Also responsible for the planning, design and implementation of projects supporting CCISM Learning Systems as well as any documentation and tutorial support for the these systems
Develop active and dynamic Web content with gateways to databases to learning systems requirements
Communicate with various people in Administrative and Computing Services departments to ensure university standards in Web delivery are maintained, (e.g. Statistics tracking, FOIPP, security)
Test and debug the developed programs and systems thoroughly
Supervise and coordinate staff required to complete projects in a timely manner, when necessary
Maintain appropriate documentation of all phase of projects, historical tracking of completed projects, and training documentation of applications.Maintain existing systems using ongoing and systematic methods
Analyze and plan for system upgrades as required
Systems Administration (20%)
Works with the Computing Services Web Unit Supervisor to evaluate, select and install the hardware required for the dedicated Web servers
Works with the Senior Systems Administrator to ensure that security and backup standards for the client are being met for CCIS servers
Is responsible for the optimization and maintenance of the Linux operating system on Web Servers, including network configuration and services
Responsible for the installation and maintenance of Web services such as search engines, Web statistics, and the Apache http server which includes extending services to implement specific modules (e.g. Perl, Java Development Kit, Java servlets, the Apache XML project)
Is responsible for the setup and administration of database engines on Web servers for supporting database driven Web pages
Is responsible for supporting all CCIS staff access to the Web servers
User Support (25%)
Is responsible for the analysis, design, development, delivery and overall supervision of user support for the CCIS electronic learning environment
Users involved are students, CCIS staff members and any other client staff or outside contacts requiring assistance with this environment
Directly involved in user support as well as responsible for the supervision of the Virtual Helpdesk
Supervision of the Virtual Helpdesk also requires recruiting and hiring new members as needed
Requires communication with the CS Helpdesk Supervisor to assist their members with coordinating referrals to CCIS-specific queries
Is responsible for development and delivery of user support for senior computer science student projects on the Linux platform
In supplying systems support and helpdesk support analyzes students problems, student project requirements and answers questions or refers to tutor as appropriate
This requires a considerable breadth and depth of computer science expertise for senior undergraduate and graduate projects
