This 108 year old, non-profit organization has an annual operating budget of $51 million dollars and generates revenue through three activity streams:  the 15 day annual summer Fair which averages 800,000 guests each year, Playland amusement park including Fright Nights which welcomes 375,000 guests annually, various  year-round events including concerts, trade shows and film and park care and facility maintenance.  The PNE is proud of the work it does at Hastings Park and has a vibrant team that is passionate about events, guest experience and being the best we can be.

     The PNE’s Human Resources team is looking for an OH&S Officer to work with PNE’s current OH&S Advisor in a variety of safety initiatives across the organization. The OH&S Officer will play an important role in building the PNE’s safety culture by supporting new safety initiatives, programs and policies across the PNE’s various business streams such as the Fair, Playland, Fright Nights and events.

    What will you do this year?

    In your role as the OH&S Officer - Playland, your primary accountabilities will be to:

    Complete site inspections and audits to identify hazards and make recommendations to Management to eliminate or reduce risks and increase safety.
    Monitor safety compliance of all workers and sub-contractors who perform work in Playland.
    Assist in conducting incident investigations involving near misses, accidents or medical aid injuries and work with management, supervisors and employees to identify corrective actions to prevent future incidents.
    Assist in the collection, input, and analysis of incident and injury data to track and identify trends.
    Promote the BBO/Near Miss program through self-participation and encouragement of all employees on site; and ensure submissions receive feedback regarding in a timely manner.
    Organize and conduct new employee orientations and departmental safety training as required.
    Assist PNE departments in identifying and resolving health and safety concerns and aid in creating accountability at all levels to continually improve and enhance the safety culture within Playland.
    Conduct OH&S safety meetings and toolbox talks.
    Manage Playland’s fire extinguisher program.
    Liaise with Directors, Managers, Supervisors, Employees and Contractors to ensure that work on site is being undertaken in a healthy and safe manner.
    Assist in the development of Safe Work Policies, Procedures and Job Safety Analysis.
    Identify hazards and deficiencies and intervene respectfully and proactively with the use of open ended questions when unsafe conditions arise; coach, mentor and enforce OH&S Regulations and PNE OH&S Policies with all staff as required.
    Perform other health and safety related activities as required.

    What else?

    Must have or be working towards completion of NCSO designation or a certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.
    Must have with a minimum of three years of field health and safety experience preferably within a construction environment
    Strong oral communication skills, including strong public speaking skills, to motivate large groups of new and young staff and to communicate technical subjects to non-technical audiences is required.
    Strong written communication skills to develop training materials, tool box talks, safety bulletins, inspections and audit reports is required.
    Level 2 or 3 Occupational First Aid Certificate is considered an asset.
    Ability to foster effective working relationships with staff, peers, union officials, industry colleagues, government officials and other external contacts.
    Working knowledge of computer applications, such as the Microsoft Office Suite applications Word, Excel, PPT is required.
    Ability to perform interventions with workers, supervisors and contractors in a respectful and proactive manner.
    Must have the ability to prioritize tasks and complete projects with multiple deadlines in a timely manner.
    Must be able to work both effectively in a team setting with the ability to work independently as required.
    Ability and willingness to work extended hours (weekends and late nights) during the August Fair-time period and peak periods.
    Successful candidates must undergo a criminal record check.
